GE - Combined Geo-Scientist Exam 2025

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts a competitive examination for recruitment and selection to the post of Geologist, Geophysicist and Chemist Group 'A' in GSI and Junior Hydro-geologist (Scientist 'B'), Group 'A' for Central Ground Water Board.

Exam Pattern

The exam consists of three tiers:

  1. Stage I: Preliminary Examination
  2. Stage II: Main Examination
  3. Stage III: Personality Test

Stage I: Preliminary Exam

Preliminary exam will screen the candidates for taking the Main Exam (Stage - II). Marks secured in this exam are counted for deciding the final merit. It is a Computer Based Examination. The Preliminary exam is of objective type having two Papers. Paper - I is General Studies and is common for all the streams.

Stage II: Main Exam

Main exam has three papers for each stream. All Papers are of descriptive type. Marks secured in this examination are counted for deciding the final merit.

Main Examination

There are four papers in each category. General English is common for all categories. The examination in all the subjects is of conventional type.

Interview for personality test of such candidates as may be called by the Commission, carry a maximum of 200 marks.

If you are competing for posts of Geologist and Jr. Hydrogeologist, then you are required to appear in all the subjects mentioned under category I and category IV.

About Geology

Geology and its allied disciplines are concerned with the structure, dynamics and evolution of the earth and its natural mineral and energy resources. Hydrogeologists focus on the relation of waters on or below the surface of the earth.
