How to Join Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala
AcademyThe Indian Naval Academy (INA) is the initial officer training establishment of the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard. It is located in Ezhimala, Kannur district of Kerala. The INA has a 7 kilometre beach front on the Arabian Sea. It conducts basic training for all officers inducted into the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard.
The training zone contains the main academic building complex, as well as physical-training, aquatics and outdoor-training complexes, auditoriums, a firing range, cadet’s Mess and cadet’s dormitories. The academy accepts up to 1200 cadets for officer-training each year. This includes officer-trainees from foreign countries, as well as interim training facilities for the Indian Coast Guard.
You can join the Naval Academy either through NDA/NA examination or through 10+2 B.Tech Entry after 12th or you can join it after graduation.
1. NDA/NA Exam
Through this, only male candidates who have Physics and Maths in 12th can apply. NDA cadets opting to join the Navy complete three years of joint training at NDA, Khadakwasla with the Army and Air Force cadets. Then, they are transferred to INA for the next one year.
Joining at Academy: January and July
Cadets have the option to major in Electronics & Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture and are awarded a Bachelor of Technology degree upon graduation.
Upon graduation, cadets are commissioned as Sub Lieutenants in the Navy. Cadets majoring in Naval Architecture have to undergo an additional six months of training at the Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam after graduation.
2. Through 10+2 B.Tech Entry
This is a new entry scheme of the Navy. SSB calls are made directly to male candidates having passed class 12th with with 70% in PCM and 50% in English in 10th or 12th standard. JEE (Mains) rank is compulsory to apply for 10+2 (B.Tech) entry. Post receipt of applications, candidates are shortlisted for SSB based on JEE (Main) – All India Rank (AIR) for BE/B Tech curriculum.
Selected Candidates are inducted as Cadets for four year B.Tech course in Electronics & Communication or Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala.
During the course, Cadets are allotted Executive or Engineering including Naval Architect specialisation or Electrical Branch. On completion of the course, B.Tech Degree is awarded by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
3. Through CDS Exam
Male graduates who have B.Sc. with Physics & Mathematics or Bachelor of Engineering can apply for Naval Academy. The successful candidates of the written exam are called for SSB and further for medical tests.
Joining at Academy: January and July
4. Other Graduate Entries
Through this, graduates and final year students can apply. There is no written test. The calls are directly made for SSB based on cut-off percentage of the qualifying exam.
